7 YEARS BAD SEX
BY NICKY WELLS

One wedding. One curse?  Disaster ever after…

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.

MY REVIEW:

I have to say (as I suspect a few people will) that as soon as I saw the title of this book I simply had to read it. The first question in my mind was: 7 Years Bad Sex? How? Yes, I was wondering how a newlywed couple (who incidentally had a healthy sex life until the earth moved in a not so good way on their wedding day) would survive seven years without sex. More, though, I was wondering how an author could sustain it: keep the reader engaged and write about failed sexual exploits without writing about, well, the nitty-gritty of those failed exploits. I am super-pleased to say Nicky Wells pulled it off beautifully and with that special kind of laugh out loud humour that still has you feeling for the couple. A certain line, dare I repeat it??? Um, no. That would be a spoiler. Let’s just say the climax was building, we were definitely heading for that Yes, YessS, YessSSS, moment – and then there was an unfortunate reaction … to rubber. Please wash out your minds. It’s not quite what you’re thinking. Yup, I laughed out loud, in public. When I read the workmen scene prior, ditto. Nicky has a fabulous knack of portraying people that makes you instantly recognise them as people you know or have had contact with. The supporting cast, Alex’s best mate and best man with his nudge, nudge, wink, wink ribald mentality, the girlfriends with their get-the-goss and then try to fix it philosophy, James and Rodge, they’re all living, breathing people.

As are Alex and Casey. Along with the humour there are such tender moments as they search for the missing essential ingredient that supposed to seal their marriage. This is a couple that is meant to be together. They are soul mates. Poor Alex, even though he’s absolutely horrified and petrified that he can’t perform, that his manhood is under threat, he recognises Casey’s feelings of inadequacy and hurts for her. I adored his sensitive handling of the, um, sex toy situation.

I give this fabulous book a resounding five, not for its bravado, but for its sensitivity, superb writing and sheer entertainment. Loved it! Definitely highly recommended.

In celebration of the e-launch day for Alison May’s brand new romantic comedy, Midsummer Dreams, I’m posting today on the theme of all things dream-related.

Firstly, though, I’m sharing the cover of the book, which you have to agree is just…

*sigh* …utterly dreamy.

About Midsummer Dreams

Four people. Four messy lives. One party that changes everything …

Emily is obsessed with ending her father’s new relationship – but is blind to the fact that her own is far from perfect.
Dominic has spent so long making other people happy that he’s hardly noticed he’s not happy himself.
Helen has loved the same man, unrequitedly, for ten years. Now she may have to face up to the fact that he will never be hers.
Alex has always played the field. But when he finally meets a girl he wants to commit to, she is just out of his reach.
At a midsummer wedding party, the bonds that tie the four friends together begin to unravel and show them that, sometimes, the sensible choice is not always the right one.

Okay, here we go: Once upon a time, I had a dream…

We all have dreams or goals, things we want to achieve and possibly don’t feel qualified, confident or competent enough to attempt. Apart from the fact that I wanted to be a writer (gosh, there’s a surprise), there was one other simple ambition in life I had. I wanted to fly. No, really, I wanted to fly. Okay, so being somewhat physically challenged in the wings department, I did realise this might be a bit over-ambitious, particularly as I openly admit I am also geographically challenged. At the risk of certain people pointing out it’s a scientific fact that I might be less spatially aware than some (other people), my navigational skills are nil. Flying solo across the Atlantic therefore was off the agenda, even with the assistance of a plane. I didn’t fare too well at paragliding either, also being somewhat challenged in the biceps department. Put it this way, if my drop zone had been the sea, I couldn’t fail to have missed it.

So did I achieve my ambition? Well…

I came pretty close.

I had a nightmare…

It’s a recurring nightmare actually. I have it every time I set off on a car journey. Please don’t ask me to do a U turn on the motorway nice satnav lady...

My dream for the future…
That would be for a world in which children would never have to be lonely, hurting or scared.

Keep safe all!

Lots of love,

Extract:

 “Who’d want to be famous?”

Charlie and I are hovering in the airport’s baggage reclaim area, hoping our luggage has managed to find its way to France too.

“Before I got this job I thought being a star was all glamourous living, oodles of money in the bank and being worshipped by all your adoring fans.”

The baggage carousel emits several loud clunks closely followed by a high pitched screeching noise before slowly starting up.

“But now,” I continue, lowering my voice, “I know being famous makes you a target for all the stalkers, murderers and crazies out there. One minute Amelia Kingston is receiving her Oscar for best actress in the blockbuster movie Forever Mine. The next she’s well, you know....”

Beside me Charlie nods and grabs his battered holdall from the baggage carousel. Then we have to wait for what seems like an eternity before my bright purple suitcase puts in an appearance too.

“Still not got the hang of this travelling light business have you?” he says hauling my own case from the conveyor belt.

“We’re staying in a luxury mountain chalet in the French Alps. Who knows what outfits I might need? I can’t pack light for this,” I retort whilst feeling a tad guilty about just how much I have crammed into my case. I had to sit on it to force the lid closed.

He shakes his head. “We’re working, Amber.”

“Yes, but we’re working undercover and the other guests will be glam celebrities wearing designer outfits so I’ll need to have some half-decent clothes with me. I can’t just turn up for dinner every night in jeans and a sweater.”

“Why not? I am,” he replies as we head for the exit, Charlie tugging my suitcase behind him.

Outside the wind is bitingly cold and almost blows me off my feet as we exit the airport terminal and head for the car hire offices. We left behind a warm spring day in the UK but here it feels more like February than May. I pull on a jacket.

See, that’s another reason why I needed to pack quite so much. The weather in the mountains is notoriously fickle. A girl needs to be prepared for sun, snow and rain where we’re going.

This is my second case as a support officer for the Celebrity Crimes Investigation Agency (otherwise known as the CCIA) and I’m still nervous about the whole catch-a-killer side of my work. OK, it’s mainly for the fully trained CCIA agents to do that side of the job whilst I provide, as my job title suggests, support on the case.

I do have a tendency to get a little bit carried away sometimes though and find myself in, shall we say, tricky circumstances. Like on my first case when I ended up in a cave on a deserted beach with a murderer who had a knife at my throat.

Anyway, technically, it’s the agents who are the guys with the special ‘clearance’ to do all sorts of things (sometimes against the law) to solve a case and get murderers put behind bars. Charlie even carries a gun. Which, to be honest, freaks me out just a little.

Author Bio:

Zanna Mackenzie lives on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border in the UK with her husband, 4 dogs, a vegetable patch that’s home to far too many weeds and an ever expanding library of books waiting to be read.
Being a freelance writer and editor of business publications is her ‘day job’ but, at every opportunity, she can be found scribbling down notes on scenes for whatever novel she’s working on. She loves it when the characters in her novels take on minds of their own and start deviating from the original plot!

Castaway in the CaribbeanCastaway in the Caribbean by Janice Horton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If escapism is what you’re looking for, this book is it. You know you’re going to get a satisfying ending. You also know from the quality of the writing you’re going on a tantalising adventure before you reach your destination. We open with Janey Sinclair, a columnist for Hot Scot magazine. The author sets the scene fabulously: straightway we have who Janey is, where she’s going, what she wants – or possibly doesn’t. We, the reader, know absolutely, that good looking, apparently caring, (nicely done, Janice Horton) Mark isn’t it. We’re soon whisked off to the Caribbean, where Mark proposes. What? So, what’s not to like? Quite a lot, actually. Mark’s romantic gesture lacks spontaneity. It’s all carefully planned, right down to the last repetitive detail. The man is a control freak. Janey doesn’t plan to run, but run she does: off to meet a photoshoot deadline for her mag on a neighbouring island.

Meeting her travel companion, arrogant, unkempt, good-looking boat-owner, Travis, we’re not surprised she doesn’t make the deadline. Here he is, our gorgeously flawed hero – and there’s lots not to like, but we love him. Marooned on an island with the most seemingly obnoxious, full of himself, incompetent captain ever (even his boat’s unkempt for goodness sake!), the two must learn to get along if they’re to survive an unforgiving climate and marauding pirates. This is a story of self-discovery, a love against all odds kind of story – and I absolutely adored it. You’re simply there: heading for the idyllic white sandy beach, dining on venomous Lionfish, fighting back tears of humiliation and frustration, ditto the lush tropical foliage. With sparks flying, danger and delicious twists and turns along the way, this story is perfect escapism. Bliss in a book.

Enjoy!

A little browse of the blurb?

The Rest of My Life

“You can’t run away from commitment forever … “

Adam Hamilton-Shaw has more reason than most to avoid commitment. Living on a houseboat in the Severn Valley, his dream is to sail into the sunset – preferably with a woman waiting in every port. But lately, his life looks more like a road to destruction than an idyllic boat ride…

Would-be screenplay writer Sienna Meadows realises that everything about Adam spells trouble – but she can’t ignore the feeling that there is more to him than just his bad reputation. Nor can she ignore the intense physical attraction that exists between them.

And it just so happens that Adam sees Sienna as the kind of woman he could commit to. But can he change his damaging behaviour – or is the road to destruction a one-way street?
